Inspiration and influences for Hard Change
The inspiration for the book comes from everyone struggling to deliver and improve public services in the narrowing gap between a rock and a hard place. Dawn wants to tell the hidden stories of people working under pressure and to shine a light on the real complexities of life. Dawn has great insider knowledge having worked in and around town halls for 20 years, in partnership with police and health colleagues. She’s run her own business and is now delighted and slightly amazed to have become an author.
Influences include: Ian Rankin’s Rebus, Lindsay Gordon novels of Val McDermid, for the great characters and interesting bits in the edges of the stories; the intrigue and machinations of CP Snow’s Corridors of Power and Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall; Ali Smith’s amazing gift of lightness and depth in all her books; Amanda Craig’s Hearts and Minds for the scope and story of the city; Justin Cartwright’s subtle emotion and humour. And plenty of great tv dramas: The West Wing, The Killing, Borgen and classic brit tv series like Prime suspect, Cracker, Alan Bleasdale’s GBH and Debbie Horsfield Cutting It.
